This presentation takes the publication of Photography in Southeast Asia: A Survey (NUS Press, 2016) as starting point. This publication is by no means a conclusive study of photographic practices in Southeast Asia. However, it proposes that a survey as such is the basis of future comparative work. In this talk, I will share a few projects that I am currently working on, vis-a-vis the writing of photography in Southeast Asia, as a partial response against the critical comments made on this publication. These projects include a mapping and typology of photobooks in Southeast Asia, and the relationship between salon photography, nationalism and Cold War.
