As the foundation of Image Communication Technology, “Photography” has rapidly evolved into “Photography 4.0 Era” since the latter half of the 2000s. In this new era, the final presentation of a photo artist’s work becomes a “Photobook” instead of one single “Original Print,” while in most photography exhibitions, the style of “Square Matrix Photo Installation” or the so-called “Semantic Spreading Activation Photo Installation” has replaced the traditional linear arrangements of photographs. “From Here On” was the manifesto proclaimed by five renowned curators (Clément Chéroux; Martin Parr, Eric Kessels, Joan Fontcuberta, and Joachim Schmid) for the International Photography Festival Arles, the very first Photography Festival in the world history, in the year of 2011. The first sentence of the manifesto is “Now we are a species of editors.” As the symbol of this new age, on the top of this manifesto on the official website is the work “Suns from Sunsets from Flickr, 2006”by a New York artist Penelope Umbrico, who downloaded 541,795 images from Flickr on 26 th January 2006, chose 2,500 from them, and “created” the series. Before, the knowledge and techniques required to process photography, and to manipulate materials and equipment were necessary for a professional photographer during the “Photography 1.0 Era.” Now, the key words for “Photography 4.0 Era” have evolved into “how to treat a single photograph as a single word or ‘parts of a meaningful whole’” and “how to write a photo essay or even a photo dissertation/photobook of social criticism by arranging the contextual information between multiple photographs. Ahead of its time, FOTOSOFT Institute of Photography Taipei, started the “Photo Literacy Education (PLE)” system since the early 2000s. The goal is to help students achieve “Photo Eloquence,” which contains the following abilities: to master (1) Vantage Points, (2) Visual Language within Images, (3) Language of Cast Shadow, (4) Language of Images, (5) Semantic Meaning within Images, (6) Contextual Information of Images, (7) Classical allusions to Art Works, and to (8) properly Interpret images. This presentation will cover the details and educational strategy of this PLE education system.
