Our exhibition focuses on photographers who have created their artist books through workshops organized by Reminders
Photography Stronghold (RPS). We here choose six key words, and introduce photo books and its contents which are related
with each word, while we also give introduction to our photo book making procedure.
Through showing photographers’ notices and how they overcame those difficulties on the way of editing, we want viewers to
feel unlimited possibilities of photo book development along with its difficulties, and how photographers dig their private stories
down into the form of photo book.
On the way of book making process, photographers need not only shooting skills but also accurate researching skills for
digging their stories down deeper and deeper. They should not even hesitate to include any visual material, nevertheless
those are their own photos or not. Only those who could throw away unnecessary pride and focus on their best ways to tell
stories can finally reach to the point where no one else could arrive before.
Photographers now can edit on the computer screen. However the book making process of RPS is heavily focusing on the
output of dummy books. Touching, facing and considering about photo books often give photographers new perspectives. It is
simply because those give them more self consciousness about what they are actually creating. Photographers can further
seek meanings on each details such as choice of papers, way of printing, size, weight, sense of touch, flavor and structure of
the book.
It is not rare that photographers suffer into consequences of trial and error. They may need to throw away stereotyped ideas,
then give meanings on each details through their personalized point of view. Only those who could overcome its suffer can
finally reach to the point of creating valuable photo book as an object.
RPS have been organized several photo book making workshops including “Photo Book as an Object” and “Masterclass” with
international instructors. Participants first bring their materials, and then try to understand what is not enough for telling their
stories through discussions and self considerations. End of the workshop does not mean the end of editing process.
Photographers just get cues for developing their books. Only those who never stop thinking and trying after the workshop can
finally make actual results which sometimes give international influences. We are very proud of them and their photo books.
Thanks again for giving us this opportunity to introduce our works here in New Zealand. We hope you to enjoy the show.
Meanwhile, we are also expecting to encounter several passionate untold stories which will probably be given birth as a photo
book in the future.
