The 90’s, was a brave new world for the creatives in Hong Kong, with determination and fearless energy, photographers were all too ready to take a giant leap to an unknown and yet interesting world of expression, other than ‘Documentary’ or ‘Salon’ photography. Dislocation / Nu Na He Duo premier or zero issue was released in 1992, a 16 pages independent magazine attached to Photo Pictorial Magazine; which then had a solid readers base in Mainland China and Taiwan. It mainly focused on fabricate photography, with Li Ka-sing, Holly Lee and Lau Ching- ping as editors to establish a photo visual magazine. The contributors included poets, painters, dancers etc., to seek new definition on contemporary photography. With Dislocation forth ran possibilities for alternative photographers to showcase their works, independent photo groups started to form and published their bimonthly, quarterly or release randomly, to show their ideas and concepts on photography. ‘Mahjong’ was released 2009 by a group four photographers. Ki Wong brought out Klack : Photography and culture magazine in 2010. On the other end, The Asia One publishing released the Hong Kong China photographers volume from 2008 onward. Independent and small publisher like the MCCM, released ‘Our Home, Shek Kip Mei 1954- 2006 by Vincent Yu, Brownies, Book B established in recently years dedicated solely to bring out photo books of Hong Kong photographers. There were also photographers self published and financed their own book, like ‘Double Gaze’ by Lau Chi-chung, Lau Ching-ping brought out ‘Thin As Air’ in 2017. Chan Wai Kwong releases self produced photo books from 2013 onward.
